The Theotokos

The panel is executed in relief technique with subsequent hand painting that imitates gold leaf and inlay. The contrasting combination of dark and golden tones gives the work depth and expressiveness.

One image — Mother and Child — in dozens of states: from the Vladimir icon to a dark face in rays of gold leaf and an almost abstract mark on blue. The series rests on the face: however little of the icon is left, it still looks at you.
