Onion Dome and Shingle

Shingle is the wooden scale that covers a dome: each plate is hewn separately. Survey notes are left in the margins, as on an architectural sheet.

A church built without a single nail, taken apart into what it is made of: aspen scales of the domes, tier upon tier, the plan on a sheet. Dark wood, red and birch bark — the palette of the North, where everything is made by hand.
