Dalecarlian Horse

The Dalecarlian horse is carved from wood in Sweden and painted with kurbits scrollwork. It is taken here as a relative of Dymkovo — the same toy, a different north.

A palm-sized toy raised to a metre and built in relief: mane, harness, dot by dot. The horse and the lady once shaped from clay and whitened with chalk now stand on gold — as what they always were: small household icons.
