The background is laid in flat color, with the trunks painted over it. Lilac is set into the shadow, between the trunks.

Birch bark peels away in layers every few years, and its pattern never repeats. This series assembles it into a grid with graphite leaves and carries it through to a rhythm of verticals. Some fragments are left without pigment.
