Essay
The crimson shield is the most frequent colour in Russian military memory: it is in the "Tale of Igor's Campaign", on the banners of Kulikovo Field, in the chronicle miniatures where the druzhina is set in rows of identical helmets. The host there is not a crowd but a rhythm: spear to spear, shield to shield, one standard over all.
The series takes that rhythm. Three foot soldiers in mail, drawn in ink as silhouettes on a light field — almost pure graphics. Red cavalry with standards, flooded red on red, where the figures differ from the ground only in relief. Blue riders on blue — the same move in a cold colour. And engraved rows of the druzhina built up in hatching, as on a chronicle page. Black, red and gold on the banners are the whole palette, and it is enough.
The matter is relief on artboard, paint, gold leaf on standards and spearheads, epoxy resin. In the red works the figures are modelled in volume and flooded with the same colour as the ground: they are seen by their shadow, not by their paint. The edition is numbered.
A series for a study, a meeting room, a company lobby — where the wall should speak of order and line. Three warriors on a light field are the quietest piece in the series; the red cavalry is the loudest.
