Essay
The Archangel Michael is the only figure in Christian iconography painted with a sword. He is the commander of the heavenly host, and the Russian tradition has always seen him as the guardian of city and home: his image was set above the gates of kremlins and embroidered on banners. Beside him in this series stand a helmeted warrior, the Virgin of the Sign with raised hands, and figures with standards: a sacred cycle in which angel and man stand in one line.
The works are made in different manners, and that is deliberate. A stained-glass triptych — coloured fields divided by a dark contour, like lead in a window. The Archangel in blue on white tile, almost Delft. The helmeted warrior — dense relief with the mail built dot by dot. The Virgin of the Sign on blue — flat painting with gold leaf. Between them lies the whole range of what the studio can do with an image.
The matter is relief on artboard, paint, leaf gold, epoxy resin. Sword and halo are gold over relief; the blue fields are poured in layers. Every work is assembled by hand; the edition is numbered.
A series for those who want a guardian image: a study, a hallway, the room by the door. An archangel with a sword is not decoration but a post.

Every edition is closed: once exhausted, no further numbers are issued. Number and tier are recorded in the certificate of authenticity.
