Essay
"Bathing of a Red Horse" was painted in 1912, two years before the war, and has been read ever since as a prophecy: a huge red horse the boy cannot hold, and a tilted horizon, as if the earth were a sphere and we stood on its edge. Petrov-Vodkin called it exactly that: spherical perspective. And three colours — red, blue, yellow — in place of the whole palette.
The series is a homage. The red horse, the turquoise water, the tilted horizon are translated into glossy relief: the horse modelled, the water poured in layers, the horizon left leaning. What matters in the painting is kept — colour and tilt — and everything else flows. Beside it, stylisations with sculpture and shots in the workshop: a series that remembers it has an author before its author.
Relief on artboard, layered pours of turquoise and red pigment, leaf gold on the highlights of the water, epoxy resin that makes the red as deep as lacquer. The edition is numbered.
A series for a living room, a study, a gallery, for those who know the Russian avant-garde by sight. A red horse on the wall is a quotation understood in any museum in the world.
