Ornament
Essay
Ornament was never decoration. It is the language once spoken by shawls, towels and windows: Pavlovo Posad roses meant celebration, cross-stitch on a towel was a charm, a carved window frame was the border between house and street. The pattern lived on the object and left daily life together with it. The language remained.
The series takes ornament off the object and hangs it on the wall by itself. Roses on a black field, larger than on any shawl. A blue Delft triangle — a pattern that came from the other end of Europe and settled. Embroidery with the double-headed eagle, a window frame, a butterfly, a rooster — each work takes one motif and brings it to a size at which it can finally be seen.
Relief on artboard — stitch, carving and brushstroke modelled in volume; paint; leaf gold in the contours; epoxy resin. The cross-stitch is built cell by cell, as on canvas, but every cell is a centimetre. The edition is numbered.
A series for a living room, a bedroom, a restaurant, a boutique. Ornament gets on with any furniture because it is older than all furniture.
The object
Each work is built by hand at the st.Aura studio. The object's data is recorded in the series passport and the studio registry.
Editions
Every edition is closed: once exhausted, no further numbers are issued. Number and tier are recorded in the certificate of authenticity.
