A carpet on the wall was a sign of plenty every apartment knew: it hung above the sofa, above the bed, in grandmother's bedroom. Its pattern — Persian or Turkmen in origin — was learned by heart by a whole generation that fell asleep looking at it. It is the country's most domestic ornament, and its most underrated.

The series covers it halfway. Black lacquer with gold floods the carpet from below or from the side, the border runs in teeth, and the pattern shows through the pour as through water. It reads better this way than whole: what remains, you read closely. A series about memory — some of it is sealed for good, the rest shines.

The carpet pattern is built in relief and painted by hand, the pile imitated by the texture of the ground. The pour is black pigment in epoxy resin with leaf gold fused into the lacquer. The border is made by hand, tooth by tooth. The edition is numbered.

A series for a bedroom, a living room, a study with dark walls. A lacquered carpet is a thing recognised from the doorway and then examined for a long time.
