Visages

A face is recognised before any other form: an infant finds its mother's eyes in the second week. That is why a face can be covered, broken into dots, drawn over with a net — and it will still look back. The gaze is read before the features, and the series is built on that one property.

A woman's face with red lips built dot by dot like counted embroidery. Blue stars laid over it — a net through which only the eyes show. A face in dots and in stripes — a portrait taken apart into a raster and put back together by the viewer's eye. No work tries to be a likeness: the series is not about someone but about what looks.

Relief on artboard — the dots and stripes modelled; paint; leaf gold in the stars and the highlights of the eyes; epoxy resin, which gathers the raster into one face. The edition is numbered.

A series for a bedroom, a dressing room, a salon, a study where it matters to be looked at. The Gaze is the studio's closest work: it holds eye contact.
